Mayor, 4 City Council seats up for grabs

Posted

Surprise City Council candidates are braving the sweltering Arizona heat in front of City Hall today in a last-ditch effort to get votes in the primary election.

Polls are still open until 7 p.m. at City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza, for residents to drop off their ballots.

The mayor seat and city councilmembers in Districts 2, 3, 4 and 5 will likely be settled today. But for any race where a candidate didn't receive 50% of the vote, it will be settled between the top two vote-getters in the November general election.

The only district where that's possible this year is District 5 because only official write-in candidates count toward the percentage. City Councilman David Sanders is facing a challenge from Jack Hastings on the ballot, while Kawika Henderson qualified as a write-in, which could factor into the primary percentage.

The elections for mayor and Districts 2, 3 and 4 have terms ending Dec. 31, 2024. The District 5 councilmember will serve a two-year term ending Dec. 31, 2022, since it is an election to fill an appointed seat.

Tonight's results will be available on the city’s website and Surprise TV, the city’s cable TV channel.

The winners will assume office the first meeting in January after receiving the official oath of office.
