High schoolers wanted for Teen Court

Posted

The city of Surprise Human Service and Community Vitality Department is accepting applications for the Surprise Youth Justice Project, a program for high school students committed to increasing the availability of restorative justice opportunities for young people.

SYJP, in partnership with Maricopa County and Surprise City Court, engages students in the justice process by providing opportunities to participate in Teen Court, a diversion program for juvenile offenders, where cases are assessed by a collection of their peers and appropriate consequences are determined.

Students must be in ninth through 12th grades and attending high school within the Surprise city limits or reside within city limits to be eligible to participate.

Interested students must be able to attend trainings and participate in Teen Court which is held from 3 to 5 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month.

To apply, applicants must submit a video submission, no longer than 1 minute and 15 seconds, that includes the following information:
• Name, grade and school.

• What is justice?
• What role should justice play in our community?
• Why do you want to be a part of this project?

Video submissions must be shared from Google Drive to Youth Services Coordinator Donte Scroggins at cityofsurpriseyouth@gmail.com.
Applicants must also have a parent or guardian email a completed parent acknowledgement form to cityofsurpriseyouth@gmail.com.

The video submission and parent acknowledgement form must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31.

For questions or information, contact Donte Scroggins at 623-222-1029 or Donte.Scroggins@surpriseaz.gov.
