Spirit picked to win SAC again

OUAZ now opens season March 6 vs. ACU

Posted

After winning its first Sooner Athletic Conference title last season, the OUAZ football team has been picked by the league’s coaches to repeat that feat this spring in an abbreviated football season.

OUAZ received 45 points and five first-place votes to edge out Langston for the No. 1 position by one point. In addition to the five votes as the favorite, the Spirit received a second-place vote and one fourth-place vote.

Last season, the Spirit finished a 9-2 season as champions of the SAC and with the program’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series. In going 7-1 in conference play, OUAZ snapped Langston’s 24-game conference winning streak.

The Spirit will kickoff the new season on March 6 when they host Arizona Christian at Spirit Field.

The original opener at Texas Wesleyan on Feb. 27 has been canceled due to COVID protocols within the TWU program.

The poll was determined by votes from the league head coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Texas College has opted out of competition this season and were not included in the poll.
