Salvation Army West Valley Corps doubles daily meals served

Sun Cities Corps in need of more donated items

Entering its sixth week of Emergency Disaster status at The Salvation Army Sun Cities Valley Corps, 17420 N. Ave. of the Arts, Surprise, the number of meals the Corps serves daily has more than doubled.

In an April 20 email to advisory board members, captains Mark and Kathy Merritt noted that the number of meals the Corps serves has gone up from 150 per day at the beginning of the Emergency Disaster status to 320 per day currently. The Corps served 87 hot breakfasts and 87 sack lunches in the first 17 minutes it was open on Monday, April 20, according to the update.

“We should pass the 7,000 meals served mark (April 21),” the email noted. “One young mother comes daily with two young boys, she is so thankful and remarked through tear stained eyes, ‘You are keeping my two boys alive.’”

The Corps serves the Sun Cities, Surprise, Peoria, El Mirage, Youngtown, Waddell, and Wittmann. Its website states that “the greatest need right now is non-perishable food items.”
