The Rotary Club of Surprise announced it has awarded $1,000 scholarships to six Surprise graduating seniors.

They are Demari Hackett from Valley Vista High School, who will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott; Ashtyn Frye from Valley Vista, who will attend Arizona State University; Mark Lowell from Imagine Prep of Surprise, who will attend the University of Arizona; Anna Villard from Valley Vista, who will attend ASU; Emma Belanger from Shadow Ridge High School, who will attend Grand Canyon University; and Vanessa Suarez from Shadow Ridge, who will attend UArizona.

Each scholarship recipient applied via the Rotary Club of Surprise website and were required to submit qualification essays highlighting their future educational track and academic goals as well as letters of reference.

Club members Tom Seros from Edward Jones, the youth chair for the Rotary Club of Surprise and Jim Rumpeltes, the scholarship committee chair, interviewed all candidates.

The six were chosen on the basis of their financial need, record of excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and community service.

The Rotary Club of Surprise has provided scholarships to graduating seniors since 2010. Fundraising events including their annual golf tournament called “Fore the Kids” raise the money to help support this program.

In 2021, the Rotary Club of Surprise was honored to be a recipient of a city of Surprise SCOP grant, which helped in part to fund the 2021 scholarship program.

In an effort to support and grow the quality of life in Surprise, the mayor and city council offer the Surprise Community Outreach Program (SCOP), which provides financial assistance to qualified nonprofits providing direct services to city of Surprise residents.

The Rotary Club of Surprise is part of Rotary International, a service organization with the motto “Service Above Self.”

The club meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays at restaurants throughout the Surprise area.

Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.

It is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all. There are more than 35,000 member clubs worldwide, with a membership of 1.2 million individuals, known as Rotarians.
