Rotary meeting discusses Benevilla offerings
Posted
The Rotary Club of Sun City West, with members from Sun City West as well as Sun City, welcomed Sara Villanueva, vice president of donor relations for Benevilla and Rotary member, as speaker at the July 24 club meeting.
Benevilla created their Home Services Program in 1981 to help provide essential services to newly arriving residents. Many of these new residents have moved from other areas, leaving their families and support group behind. Most residents want to live in their homes and age in place with increased safety and independence. Benevilla, now going into ist 40th year, shares its mission of providing enriched and essential services to the residents living in our community.
Benevilla staff and volunteers provide no cost services such as grocery shopping, transportation to doctor appointments and emergency errands, such as picking up emergency food boxes from the food bank, prescriptions and medical equipment. Volunteers of Phone Pals Program check on assigned seniors daily to make sure they are well and spend some time chatting with them to ward off loneliness, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Residents do not ride along with the volunteer for any service except doctor’s appointments. All Benevilla services have been adapted to provide safety to vulnerable senior population. Volunteers and staff are temperature checked daily, wear masks and practice six-foot distancing. During the first six months of 2020, the volunteer program provided 340 trips to doctor’s appointments and 1,060 grocery shopping trips to residents in need.
