Pops Band bringing ‘Showtime’ to Surprise

Posted

The Surprise Pops Band will perform “Showtime in Surprise” 3 p.m., Sunday, April 5 at The VISTA Center, 15550 Parkview Place, Surprise.

All Surprise Pops Band concerts are free, but audience members are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to help support the band’s partner, the Valley View Community Food Bank, at 10414 N. 107th Ave., Sun City.

Clark Chaffee will be conducting music from Broadway shows, among them “Camelot,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Guys and Dolls” and “The King and I.” “Seventy Six Trombones” from “The Music Man” will be conducted by assistant conductor Ray Laffin.

Two pieces in the concert, “Clowns” and “The Phantom Regiment,” will honor the late Laurence (Larry) Swanson, conductor emeritus of the band, who passed away in February. Mr. Swanson was instrumental in adding the Red Hot Clowns to the band’s appearances where they welcome attendees, pass out programs and occasionally perform with the band.

The Surprise Pops Band includes both amateur musicians and retired music professionals who come together from September through April to bring musical entertainment to the West Valley.
