Meet Your Surprise Organization: Military Order of the Purple Hearts

Michael Mahoney Chapter 691 meets in city now

Posted

Name: Michael E. Mahoney Chapter 691, Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA, Inc. (MOPH)

History: Started in October 1996, Chartered by National Headquarters in Dec. 21, 1996 with 54 members as the Sun Cities Chapter 691. The chapter changed its name in 2009 to honor our first Commander, Michael E. Mahoney after he passed away. Today, we have 251 Members and Associate Members living from one end of the West Valley to the other and beyond.

Town/Neighborhood: Phoenix Area/West Valley

Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The chapter meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of every month, except Jue through August, at Sands Chevrolet Surprise Purple Heart recipients and visitors are always welcome. (http://691.mophaz.org/#meetings).

Personal background highlights: Members are all Combat Wounded Veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq. We have members from each Service except the Space Force.

Professional background highlights: It is one of eight active chapters in Arizona and one of 388 MOPH Chapters around the world. MOPH has more than 49,000 members and associate members (family members of Purple Heart recipients including Gold Star Families. The Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA, Inc. is the only Congressionally Chartered Veteran Service Organization exclusively for veterans and service members wounded in conflict with an armed enemy of the United States).

Mission: The Military Order of the Purple Heart fosters an environment of camaraderie among combat wounded veterans in order to promote Patriotism, serve the military, our veterans and our communities.

What the chapter likes most about doing business here: West Valley communities are very supportive of all veteran and veteran family-oriented issues including legislative initiatives, children and youth programs, and helping all veterans and veteran family members.

What the chapter is promoting: Support for all veterans and veteran families.

A highlight event in April: The chapter’s virtual golf tournament was held on five different West Valley courses simultaneously in April. The first event of its kind in the Valley. The funds raised are used to help prevent veteran suicide, raise suicide awareness, and help needy veterans and veteran families here in Arizona.
