Local Salvation Army Corps accepting sign-ups for school supplies, backpacks

Posted

The Salvation Army-Sun Cities West Valley Corps, 17420 N. Avenue of the Arts, is taking sign-ups for school supplies and backpacks.

The group will offer these items to 500 children — 300 for first- through eighth-graders and 200 for those in grade 9-12. Sign-ups are now open and will run through July 15.

“Each of the 500 children that come to us for this program must live in one of the following communities: Surprise, El Mirage, Peoria, Waddell, or Youngtown,” stated Kathy Merritt, Sun Cities West Valley Corps captain. “The family must fall at or below government low income guidelines. They will be signed up first come first serve.”

Drive-through distributions will be 9 a.m.-noon July 29, 30 and 31 at the Sun Cities West Valley Corps location.

“On distribution day we will give each younger child a new backpack filled with binders, folders, pens, pencils, color pencils, rulers, crayons, markers, erasers, notebook paper and composition books to name a few things,” Ms. Merritt added. “The older kids will receive all of the same and will also include wider binders, wide lined notebook paper and small calculators. All of these supplies have been donated by the community who cares about the kids.”
