Letters: Sanders’ skills are benefits to entire city

Posted

Surprise Councilmember David Sanders worked for the approval of an incentive agreement to further City Center development.

David’s intention is that the Council work cooperatively to develop a strategic economic plan, one that benefits the city’s residents. With his background in commercial banking and portfolio management, David’s financial knowledge is front and center.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, David and the council, the mayor, and city staff negotiated the “new normal” that the virus brought with it. During this period the council decreased the proposed budget by $13 million. David’s conservative approach to fiscal management protected us from unnecessary tax increases, and he will work toward that goal going forward.

In July 2020 the city announced drop-off had recycling returned to Surprise after 2019’s cessation of curbside pickup. It’s notable the reestablishment of recycling was difficult and only a “can do” attitude by the council and city staff made this possible.

One of the primary duties of the mayor, council, and city staff is to protect the day-to-day heroes who protect us. David said, “The dedication of the fine people who man the fire stations and police precincts must be returned in full … by the council.”

Further goals for Surprise includes protections and enhancements for three key populations of the city: veterans, youth, and the challenged. He tirelessly works to support and give voice to those heroes who have sacrificed for us; improve youth-related activities; and, lift up and connect with those who are challenged.

David Sanders has garnered public support from a broad spectrum of his colleagues. He has been endorsed by State Reps. Carroll and Toma, State Sen. Gray, Avondale Mayor Weise,Youngtown’s Mayor LeVault and Vice-Mayor Vickers, Goodyear Councilmember Kaino, and numerous local business owners. All stressed David’s integrity, vision, and fiscal responsibility, love for Surprise, and willingness to help where possible.

I once asked David why he serves Surprise. David replied he “wanted to set the best civic example to his children and the youth of our city.” I truly believe that David Sanders lives those words.
