Letters: Sanders shows he’s up for the job in District 5

Posted

I grew up in Surprise, a third-generation resident with an uncle that served as town manager.

After leaving to serve in the Army (including a tour in Iraq where I earned a Bronze Star medal), I eventually made my way back to become part of the approximately 14% of the city’s population made up of veterans.

I raise my children in my hometown and give back to it as best I can. I have served on numerous causes related to service to the city and community over the years as an example to my children that it’s better to give back than receive.

I mention these points because service is something I take very seriously and is a quality I see in David Sanders, who I hope to see elected to his first term on the City Council this year.

As a man of faith and integrity, Mr. Sanders was already serving his community through his church and on boards and commissions prior to being appointed to the Council to fill out the remainder of this current term.

Since being a council member, Mr. Sanders has continued to do an outstanding job in serving our community’s interests. He understands the importance of the economy and has cut bureaucratic red tape to help grow our business community. Over 900 new businesses have been licensed in Surprise since his taking office and he is present for many new openings to welcome them to the community.

Mr. Sanders has also helped champion the Public-Private Partnership (3P) to help improve the city’s impact on local education, most notably by partnering with Ottawa University and the city’s economic planners for potential land acquisition to further the program. What’s more, Mr. Sanders was essential in the finalization of the city’s Downtown Master Plan so our city will have a wonderful centerpiece to match its energy and growth.

Mr. Sanders supports our first responders all the time, not just in publicity stunts like ridealong sessions or gathering supplies for them when there is no shortfall. He ensures that they are well-equipped and funded and supported so they can keep our community safe.

Mr. Sanders also supports our military and veteran community. He was part of the driving force to create the Veterans Reflection Circle and was instrumental in spearheading the “Surprise Salutes” program where high school seniors who are going into the military will receive a challenge coin and certificate of appreciation from the city after their graduation.

In conclusion, David Sanders has done great things for our city and deserves another term to keep up his great efforts on our behalf.
