Letters: Future water issues need to be addressed

Posted

Because water is so essential to our lifestyle in Surprise, with the upcoming shortages in the Colorado River, our primary source of water, we will soon be wanting to make, as a community, some decisions regarding what we want for our water future.

The Arizona Revised Statutes provide that not more than every 10 years every city must ask its voters to approve a General Plan for the future. The last version of the General Plan for Surprise was approved by the voters in 2013.

But much has changed since then. It is my understanding that the city plans to ask the voters to approve a new General Plan in 2024. But certainly some hard decisions will need to be made before then regarding how we, as a community, will address our upcoming water challenges.

So, let’s accelerate our General Plan rewrite so the voters can be heard as early as next year regarding what kind of water future we want for our community.
