Letters: 'For the People Act' not good for one reader

Posted

I have been reading about H.R. 1 / S. 1 the so-called “For the People Act,” which is under consideration in the U.S. Senate. This legislation is designed to push aside our state in favor of the federal government defining our political freedoms and futures.

In reading summaries of this bill, it really is a federal power grab of our state’s responsibility under the Constitution to be the primary manager of our elections. It directs in excruciating detail how electing congressional candidates must be run.

Through this bill, Democrats in Washington, D.C., intend to force each state to conform to these requirements for all state and local elections – or double our election system costs for not conforming to the federal guidance. Really?

I am also concerned that the integrity of my vote and our elections must be guaranteed. HR 1 / S. 1 looks to do the opposite and enable cheating in our elections. Election security is the primary responsibility of our state legislature according to the Constitution, which reviews our laws and practices and corrects any problems. I do not want unelected federal bureaucracies interfering in our elections.

Also, this bill would limit our First Amendment rights and protections of free political speech, because it forces us to report what we say on politics and legislation to the federal government. Clearly, an outrageous attempt to destroy free and open debate among citizens!

Senators Sinema and Kelly should not vote for this legislation.
