Letters: Ex-councilman calls mayor out on hypocrisy

Posted

I have remained silent on Surprise city politics since my campaign in 2018, but I saw something the other day that brought back a memory of a very sad episode of how our Surprise City Council voted 4-3 to reprimand Mayor Sharon Wolcott for endorsing a candidate for City Council back in 2016.

So these days, is it now OK for Mayor Skip Hall to publish a campaign sign with council candidate David Sanders on the same sign?

How could Mr. Hall have voted to reprimand Ms. Wolcott for endorsing Jim Hayden back in 2016, but decided that now it’s OK to endorse?

This City Council is so concerned about its ethics and propriety that it recently found cause to make a federal case out of Jack Hastings’ Arts Commission membership while running for council. At the very least, someone owes Mayor Wolcott a check for $5,000, or perhaps an apology.

Topnotch constitutional lawyers don’t come cheap, even if you’re defending a completely bogus, ad hominem charge that flew squarely in the face of the First Amendment.

This is one of the reasons that the deep pocket investors still look at Surprise and shake their heads.

This just reeks of hypocrisy.

Mr. Mankiewicz is a former Surprise city councilman.
