Education scholarship money available at OUAZ
Friends of Surprise Libraries funding awards

The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Surprise Libraries voted unanimously to fund scholarships for Ottawa University-Arizona students majoring in elementary education.
The scholarships, totaling $16,000 over four years, will be awarded based on student need and will be administered by the OUAZ Financial Aid Department.
“OUAZ is thrilled to be partnering with the Friends of the Surprise Libraries to build literacy in our community and better prepare our elementary education students to make a lasting impact on the children they will serve after graduation,” said OUAZ President Dr. Dennis Tyner.
Established in 2017 as Ottawa University’s second residential campus, OUAZ has seen dramatic growth in the West Valley. In 2020, three new campus buildings totaling $57 million were dedicated, including the O’Dell Center athletic and academic complex, Scholars Hall dormitory and OUAZ Student Union.
This fall, the university expects enrollment to top 900 undergraduate and graduate students. That number represents more than double the number of students who were enrolled in fall 2017, OUAZ’s first year.
Founded in 1998, the Friends of the Surprise Libraries is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting the presence of libraries for the benefit of the community and is supported by local citizens who volunteer their time to promote local Libraries, literacy and reading programs. The organization raises funds through an ongoing sale of used books, annual memberships, sponsorships and cash donations.
“I am honored to lead the Friends of the Surprise Libraries in making this scholarship available to the elementary education students at Ottawa University,” said Surprise City Councilwoman Aly Cline, president of Friends of the Surprise Libraries. “This is another example of a great partnership within the City of Surprise.”
The Friends of the Surprise Libraries seek to promote literacy for all in the hope that a better life will evolve for the individual as well as for the community in which the individual lives.
