Doug Curry: Impact of bus drivers is rewarding

Posted

While to most people it might seem like an average job, a school bus driver actually has quite an important role — one that can truly change the educational experience for a student.

Transporting children to and from school, field trips and off campus competitions may not seem like an important job, but what most people don’t realize is that the influence of a bus driver is silent but impactful.

Not only are these individuals taking every precaution in transporting precious cargo, but a bus driver is often the first friendly face a child may see on their way to or from school.

Bus drivers can see if a child is having a good day or bad day, and many times they can become a sounding board and positive influence for the few minutes each day that they are in that student’s life. The impact a driver or a bus aide can have on the children and their lives is extraordinarily rewarding.

Additionally, and without even realizing it, children can learn about dependability, accountability and consistency from their bus drivers, as they rely on them to be there every morning and afternoon day after day. They can see the dedication they have to their job and to the children, and learn so much from that simple interaction.

These intrinsic benefits are amazing in and of themselves, but there are also other benefits that make it worth considering as well. School bus drivers appreciate the schedule flexibility they have. Since they work for a school, they have paid holidays, and weekends and summers off, providing plenty of time for travel or family time. Those that are parents of school-aged children enjoy the perk that they can work during their children’s school schedule, but are off when schools are closed so they can be home with their children on those days.

While they do work a split shift, it allows them to run personal errands and take care of appointments during the day without worrying about missing work. Additional shifts are also available for those that want to pick up extra hours in the evenings, weekends or during summer. This can be a great benefit, especially if you enjoy watching high school sports or just want the extra earning power to boost your income.

Many individuals that have already retired or had other careers enjoy driving a school bus as it gives them something to do during the day, is a way to give back to the community, and provides them with full medical benefits and participation in the state retirement system. It’s definitely a great option for many to consider!

For those that think this opportunity might be a good fit, I encourage you to learn more at Dysart.org/Careers. Dysart Schools starting pay just increased to $20 an hour, which is one of the highest in the Valley, and increases with experience and longevity.

This might be just the thing you’re looking for, and with paid CDL training, it’s easy to get started. We hope to see some new faces behind the wheel soon.
