Arizona Charter teacher joins civics task force

Salazar will help implement Educating for Democracy Roadmap

Alondra Salazar, a seventh and eighth grade social studies teacher and seventh- and eighth-grade-level lead at Arizona Charter Academy in Surprise, was recently chosen to be part of the inaugural Teacher Task Force that will focus on Arizona Civics Education.

The Teacher Task Force was selected to lead the implementation of the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap in Arizona.

Salazar is the only charter school teacher on the Teacher Task Force.

According to information on the Arizona Civics Education website, The Teacher Task Force was selected to lead the implementation of the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap in Arizona.

“The Educating for American Democracy Roadmap shifts from breadth to depth by offering an inquiry framework that weaves history and civics together and inspires students to learn by asking difficult questions, then seeking answers in the classroom through facts and discussion,” the website notes, adding that the group of civic educators represents 22 districts in Arizona that have a passion for civic renewal.

Salazar said her passion for civics education helped inspire her to apply for the Teacher Task Force.

“Civics education is so important for our kids, because they are the ones that will be making decisions in the future,” she said.

It is also important to educate our students on how to make informative decisions and understanding how to stand up for something they care about, understanding their rights and the voice that they have and how to use that voice.”

Salazar said she is proud to be the only teacher from a charter school on the Teacher Task Force. She is also looking forward to meeting and working with other teachers from around the state who are equally passionate about civics education.

“I am very excited about developing myself more as a teacher, and of course I am also looking forward to understanding the EAD, the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap, which is not a curriculum but a tool for teachers to use to help with civic and history learning.”
