The city of Surprise is offering a summer job program for income-eligible Surprise teens between the ages of 15–19.

Through the city council-approved Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), applicants must be available to work up to 25 hours a week for six weeks between June 15 and July 24. Chosen interns will earn $12 per hour. Interns will be selected to receive professional development training; from shadowing a building inspector to working with seniors.

Eligibility requirements: family income must be at or below 80 percent of area median income; must be a full-time student; must reside in Surprise; must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; must have access to reliable transportation; and must submit letter of recommendation.

Applicants will also have to submit income verification documents at the time of application. Applicant names must be written to match what is listed on their Social Security Card. Applicants are also asked to list areas of interest so that they may be placed in a complementary employment opportunity.

Applications available online at surpriseaz.gov/syep or picked up at City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza, by visiting the welcome desk and asking for Lord Garcillano.

Electronic application submissions accepted through Sunday, March 29. In-person submissions accepted during normal City Hall business hours through Friday, March 27 at 5 p.m. Applications can be submitted via email to lord.garcillano@surpriseaz.gov.

Qualified applicants will be screened through an interview process in April. Final participants will be notified if they are selected for a position in May and must pass pre-employment screening.

Email lord.garcillano@surpriseaz.gov or call 623-222-1035.
