On behalf of all veterans, I wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those businesses for helping us celebrate Nov. 11.
I speak of your gifts to us, including free meals at your restaurants, free haircuts, car washes and more. Your recognition of our service is really special.
For many years after serving in Vietnam, I and my fellow veterans felt disrespected for having participated in a conflict many believed unjust and evil. We were demonstrated against, denounced and even spat upon as we arrived home from overseas.
I personally was asked how I could justify my serving in Vietnam. We went because we were drafted and felt a patriotic obligation to answer our country’s call.
But over the past several years, your generous efforts to honor Vietnam veterans, along with all the others who served, have really helped us feel we belong with all the distinguished veterans who answered the call throughout our country’s history.
