AARP Historic Chapter No. 1 swore in Glenn Stark as a member of the board of directors and the chapter’s first Sergeant-at-Arms at their monthly board meeting.
Besides being a member of AARP Historic Chapter No. 1 in Youngtown, Mr. Stark is a member of the Rotary Club of Surprise and the Nicky D. Bacon VFW Post 285 in Surprise. He was post commander for two years where he was honored as an all-state commander and an all-American commander. He is presently the VFW District 3 senior vice commander.
Mr. Stark joined the Army in 1967 and spent 26 months in Vietnam, more than 13 years in Europe, and was an assistant military attaché in Central America. He retired in 1998 with over 31 years of active duty.
He is chairman of the VFW Youth Scholarship Program and Teacher of the Year for VFW District 3. He also presents the VFW Post 285 awards to the police officer,firefighter and EMT of the year in front of the Surprise City Council. Mr. Stark also has been the emcee at the Annual Veterans Recognition Event at The Park in Surprise retirement communities.
“Having Glenn as a member of our board is just another example of the growth of our chapter,” chapter president Jay Lickus stated in a news release. “Glenn is a huge advocate of supporting our community and our senior population in specific.”
AARP Historic Chapter No. 1 is the oldest existing AARP chapter in the nation. It was organized in September 1960, and today has more than 75 active members.
Residents must be a member of the national AARP to join the local chapter. Dues are $10 per year.
When shelter-in-place conditions are not in effect, the chapter meets 5:30 p.m. the first Friday of every month at the Youngtown Clubhouse and Council Chambers, 12030 Clubhouse Square. Meetings begin with a potluck dinner and a guest speaker, presentation or interactive event.
