WHAM in Surprise begins basic wheel throwing lessons

WHAM Art Association, 16560 N. Dysart Road, starts the month of July with the following classes:

• Beginning Wheel Throwing 1 with Kay Attarzadeh is $208 non-members/$188 members.

The cost covers all seven sessions, which are from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; July 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21 and 26.

This is a two-part program for students interested in creating clay pots on the potter’s wheel. Students who have never touched clay or need a refresher from being away for a while will benefit greatly.

Part 1 will dive into understanding the basic fundamentals of throwing concentrating on centering and making cylinder forms. All forms except the bowl starts from a cylinder. A group dynamic environment with individual hands-on lead instructor demonstrations.

Open studio is available during WHAM business hours while enrolled in class. Students can expect to have 2 of their thrown pieces to glaze during the class.

WHAM will supply all tools necessary, although it is encouraged for students to buy their own. A beginner’s tool kit will be available for purchase or also available at Marjon’s Ceramics. Students should bring a large towel and apron.

• Surprise Vets “A Path to Healing,” free classes for veterans and first responders, is on the second Monday of every month, including:

WHAM Art Association offers a free art program for veterans of all ages from 10 a,n, to 2 p.m. the second Monday of every month including July 11.

The program will include a four-hour session in which participants will learn from professional artists. Classes will range from drawing to painting, and other mediums. Experience is not necessary.

During each session, supplies are provided for each participant and each class will be taught by a professional artist. A light lunch will also be provided.
