Sonoran Desert Chorale slates virtual spring concert

CONCERT

The Sonoran Desert Chorale offers its fourth regular concert in this year's Virtual Season.  “Let Joy Be Your Journey” will be available 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at Sonoran DesertChorale.org.

The link to the Chorale YouTube channel will go live at that time, and the online concert combines new virtual repertoire and recorded material from previous live concerts, all packaged in a video created especially for the occasion.

Program notes will be available on the website and the concert will remain on YouTube throughout the season after the premiere date.

“Let Joy Be Your Journey” includes songs that remind audiences to find joy in many different ways: through the divine, in everyday simple aspects of life and through reaching out to others. The concert is divided into three sections reflecting these thoughts.

The first section includes the up-tempo song “Worthy To Be Praised!” Delightful piano scoring plus tambourine accompaniment support the singers in a call and response setting of joy and celebration.

Sweet songs depict the work of fisherman – “Usili Boat Song” - and harvesting rice – “Potong Padi.” These folk songs describe the beauty of the surroundings and the industry of the people in lilting melodies.

The concert closes with the chorale's virtual performance of “Like a Mighty Wind.”

No tickets are required.

The Sonoran Desert Chorale was founded in 1994 and is led by artistic director Dr. Carric Smolnik. Since its inception, the group has become a highly regarded and sophisticated choral organization, presenting musical compositions from cultures around the globe as well as important pieces from the European and American music traditions. Concerts frequently include guest performances and collaborations with distinguished artists and organizations in the community.

The chorale has engaged in six international concert tours, with performances throughout Europe, including Venice, Rome, Florence, Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Budapest, Ljubljana, Bayeux, Chartres, Galway, Dublin and Edinburgh. The chorale was invited to perform with Broadway superstar Michael Crawford for the inaugural concert of the $150 million Mesa Arts Center.
