Peggy Doe celebrates 75 years as a P.E.O. sister
Posted
Peggy Doe was slated to be honored at the Arizona State P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Convention in May 2020, as one of the state’s “Golden Girls,” having been a member of the sisterhood for 75 years.
However, the Coronavirus shut down the conventions and delayed her celebration until the sisters of Chapter CG, Sun City West, decided to bring a surprise celebration to her front yard in the form of “a parade of P.E.O. love.”
Fifteen cars decorated with signs and balloons honked as sisters waved and shouted their best wishes. One of the event organizers held out a basket at the end of the driveway to collect cards and gifts. Chapter CG members signed a copy of the book, “We Who Are Sisters 150 Years of the P.E.O. Sisterhood,” which celebrates the organization’s sesquicentennial. A cake proclaiming Ms. Doe’s diamond status as a P.E.O. member was also presented.
Ms. Doe comes from a long line of P.E.O.s. Her grandmother and mother were both members, initiated in 1892 and 1907 respectively, in Chapter AA, Mount Pleasant, IA, where the organization was founded in 1869. Ms. Doe was initiated into Chapter K, NE, in 1945. She became a sister in Chapter CG in 1994, when she and her husband, Pat, moved to Sun City West after retiring.
