Patchers slate numerous classes, interest groups

The Palo Verde Patchers Quilt Club offers members many opportunities to develop new skills and friendships by providing a variety of Special Interest Groups and classes.
Traditional quilting, modern quilting, art quilting, machine embroidery, appliqué and handwork and just a few of the SIG groups. In addition, classes and demonstration are offered on a variety of quilting techniques every month.
The Quilts For Causes SIG Group has two programs to provide members the opportunity to contribute their time and skills for special causes. Shelter quilts provide quilts for women and children transitioning from abusive relationships at the New Life Center in Goodyear. Honor Quilts makes quilts for combat veterans that are presented once a month (October-May) 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month in the PVP Kuentz center club room.
At the first presentation of the season, Oct. 19, the Patchers honored siblings Ruth and Thomas Kanaley. Thomas served in the Air Force in Iraq from 1991-2009, working in life support, while Ruth served in the Air Force as a flight nurse in Germany from 1989-2010. She assisted in transporting patients who were arriving from Iraq to hospitals.
PVP’s club rooms are open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday (until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday) and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays. Announcement meetings are 10 a.m. on the first, third and fourth Tuesdays. Monthly general meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at the R.H. Johnson Social Hall. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 10 a.m. Visitors are welcome to attend meetings.
Carolyn O’Bagie Davis is the speaker for the general meeting Nov. 8. Her presentation and trunk show will focus on Hopi Indian quilting. She has written several books on the history of archaeology, quilting and western history. She has curated many traveling museum exhibits and was inducted into the Arizona quilters Hall of Fame in 2010.
