Neumann helps with skin health

Name: Sarah Neumann, MMS PAC, founder of Sun City Dermatology and Ahwatukee Skin and Laser.

Age: 48.

Business name: Sun City Dermatology, 13843 W. Meeker Blvd, Suite 101, Sun City West; 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. (hours may vary) Monday-Friday. Visit suncitydermaz.com or call 623-377-7546.

Town/neighborhood: Sun City West.

Personal background highlights: I was born and raised in rural Wisconsin, learning early on the definition of hard work, perseverance and Midwestern values. I first became interested in dermatology when I suffered from bad acne as a young adult. The town I grew up in was so small that I didn’t see a dermatologist until I went to college, and it was a life altering experience for me. After being treated, I went from someone who wasn’t comfortable looking in the mirror to a person with confidence. My interest in dermatology as a profession, however, really took off when I worked as an exchange student in Belize, Central America, during my undergraduate years. During that time, I saw infectious disease, parasitic infections and cellulitis because of Third World living conditions. I also saw how grateful patients were once they were treated. It was then that my love for this field of medicine just exploded. As soon as I returned to the states, I went to physician assistant school. I’ve now been a practicing PA for more than 20 years and those years went quickly!

Professional background highlights: In the late 2000s I was working for a large practice, but I wasn’t happy when I saw patients being rushed through appointments and treated like a “number.” I wanted to be able to provide care in a warm, inviting environment. In a complete leap of faith, and an unusual move for a PA, I opened my first practice, Ahwatukee Skin and Laser, in 2010, followed by Sun City Dermatology in 2018. I am proud to say that we’ve been awarded for “Best in Skincare” and “Best Medical Specialist” for multiple years in local polls, and we were recently voted No. 2 Dermatology Practice in the Valley in a recent citywide contest.

What I do: Sun City Dermatology is a full service general and cosmetic dermatology practice. With a staff of surgeons, physicians and estheticians, we treat all diseases of the hair, skin and nails. We also specialize in skin cancer surveillance and MOHS surgery. I personally share my time between both practices.

What I like most about doing business here: I truly enjoy the relationships we’ve formed with patients from Sun City and surrounding areas. It’s rewarding for us to be able to provide attentive care, especially in terms of skin cancer management and treatment.

Previous occupation and why I left: Before becoming a PA, I was a registered dietician. I found myself wanting more medical knowledge in dermatology, so I went back to school and received my Master of Medical Science in 2000.

Changes I’d like to see in this area: I wish health care options today were made easier for seniors to access and navigate.

What am I promoting: Our motto is “Results you can see; care you can feel.” For that reason, we focus on building healthy provider-patient relationships, while giving caring and effective treatment. We want our patients to feel like they are family.

Favorite community cause and why: Skin cancer awareness, for obvious reasons, and animal rescue causes — I’m a longtime dog lover.

When and why I started my business/employment here: I believed that Sun City and surrounding areas were underserved communities in terms of advanced dermatological care. It made sense to open our second practice in this growing part of the Valley.

My family: They still live in Wisconsin in the small town where I grew up and I see them whenever I can.

My interests and hobbies: Playing with my dogs, Stella, a 2-year-old spunky rescue pit bull, and Charlee (a girl). a 1-year-old doodle; cooking; hiking; and riding my motorcycle.

People who inspire me (and how): I’m inspired by high quality medical practitioners for their dedication to health care, and I’m a huge fan of Ina Garten, the author and Food Network hostess.

My guiding philosophy: Always do the right thing.

My advice to today’s youth: Appreciate your family, your education and learn the values of hard work, honesty and humility.
