Local DAR member receives veterans commemoration honor

Posted

Shirley Staggs, honorary chapter regent, presented Sun City resident Glydie Nelson, a member of the Sun City Agua Fria National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter, with a Vietnam War era veterans 50th anniversary commemoration lapel pin and brochure explaining the meaning of the symbols on the pin.

The Agua Fria DAR Chapter has partnered with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration Project offered by the U.S. Department of Defense to recognize, honor and thank any United States veteran for their service, sacrifice and commitment to the preservation of America’s freedom.

Any veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces between Nov. 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975 qualifies for this special recognition. Ms. Nelson served active duty for two years in the U.S. Air Force and another 10 years as a weekend “warrior” for the Air National Guard.

After retiring from the military and civil service job, Ms. Nelson was interested in finding more of her Revolutionary War patriot ancestors. Traveling around the country with her husband in their RV provided her the opportunity to research her ancestry in various vicinities of genealogical interest. On Oct. 7, 1995, she became a NSDAR member and has been presented with her NSDAR 25-year certificate this year by Esther Lloyd, Copper State Chapter regent. Ms. Nelson’s Revolutionary War patriot is John Milner, an immigrant from England who served as a refugee soldier for the colony of Georgia. Since then, Ms. Nelson has acquired 16 supplemental patriots with one supplemental patriot currently waiting for approval by NSDAR.

Ms. Nelson has been an active Daughter, holding many chapter officer positions including chapter regents, first vice regents, secretary, registrars and historian, as well as Arizona state registrar, state lineage research co-chair, state membership co-chair, state membership vice chair and state literacy promotion chairman for the literacy challenge in Alaska. She is an associate member of Alaska’s Sleeping Lady DAR Chapter and Mexico’s Thomas Paine DAR Chapter.

Ms. Nelson also belongs to many lineage organizations, holding officer positions at different times in several organizations.

There are more than 2.7 million Vietnam veterans and their families. In the state of Arizona alone, there are about 160,000 Vietnam-era veterans. For more information about the Vietnam War Commemoration, visit VietnamWar50th.com.
