Harrier helps residents see clearly

Posted

Name: Dr. Kallie Harrier.

Age: 32.

Business name: ViewFinder Low Vision Resource Center, 10001 W. Bell Road, No. 115, Sun City, call 623-583-2800; 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday.

Town/neighborhood: Sun City.

Personal background highlights: I am an Arizona State University alumni and Wisconsin native.

Professional background highlights: I graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services University with my doctorate in optometry in 2019. While at MCPHS I earned the Eschenbach Award for Excellence in Low Vision for my commitment to patients living with low vision. I have worked in both corporate and private practice settings since graduation. Currently, I am working on a master’s degree in public health and will be graduating December of 2021. Also, I am working toward becoming a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry, which should be completed in the fall of 2022. Additionally, I sit on the advisory board for a national nonprofit called the Lannie D. Chesapeake Lighthouse, which aims to “normalize the idea of people who are blind working in all industries at a comparable rate to their sighted peers”. Our current project is the Blind Dance Film Festival, featuring films made by visually impaired individuals.

What I do: I am an optometrist that focuses specifically on low vision rehabilitation. All of my patients have some form of visual impairment and it is our goal at ViewFinder to help them maintain their independence and quality of life by utilizing any remaining sight they have with special glasses, magnifiers and various other assistive technology.

What I like most about doing business here: In 2008 I moved to the Valley of the Sun and have considered it home ever since! I currently live in the West Valley and love being a part of this community. It feels great to know that I am making a difference in the lives of my neighbors.

Changes I’d like to see in this area: The reason I am working toward my master’s in public health is because I want to raise awareness about low vision. Not enough people know that low vision rehabilitation exists and that there are options available to improve quality of life. I wish more people in society recognized the challenges that visually impaired people have and offer a little patience and compassion.

What am I promoting: ViewFinder is currently promoting the OrCam MyEye2. It is a wonderful device that can offer a wide variety of assistance for things like reading your mail, a book or the Independent; it can recognize faces, scan barcodes and identifies money (just to name a few) all while remaining discrete and fitting onto a pair of glasses!

My interests and hobbies: I love hiking and exploring new places. My fiancé and I are currently trying to visit every national park in the country. We are about one-third of the way there! I also have two Siberian huskies who keep me entertained.

People who inspire me (and how): I am inspired by my patients on a daily basis. Their eagerness to improve their lives and maintain their independence is incredibly inspiring.

My guiding philosophy: Work hard and keep on smiling.
