“From crayons to pastels.  I have always wanted to be an artist,” Marijo Peterson states. “My mother was my first teacher. She taught me the art of stretching and priming canvas, taking photos with my Kodak to study design and mixing paints for underpainting and the finishing touches. I am doing much the same exploration today in the development of my work as a pastel artist.”

For the past three years, Ms. Peterson has taken classes from several Arizona pastel artists. They led her through the challenges of working in this medium and selecting subjects for her work.

“The beauty of the desert and the lifestyle adjustments I have made since we arrived the summer of 2017 have offered me a broad mixture of content and historic perspective,” Ms. Peterson states.

Ms. Peterson’s background includes a Bachelor of Science in interior design and studio art from University of Minnesota and a master’s in visual arts education from Parsons School of Design, Bank Street College of Education. She has taught drawing, rendering, design principles and design history at college level in Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan. She has been employed as an interior designer in Tucson. From 1991-2011, she became an associate professor of interior design at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI. Since 2007, she exhibited in several local, regional and national galleries and exhibits and served on the board of directors of two arts organizations in Kalamazoo. She illustrated and helped publish a children’s book, “Grandpa Thor’s Stories.” by Marianne Mueller.

In 2017, Ms. Peterson moved to Sun City. She is a member of Palo Verde Art Club, Artists by the Lake and WHAM.
