From steel to construction to insurance

Name: Delann Harshman.

Age: Baby boomer!

Business name: Harshman Insurance, 317-941-8685 or Delann@HarshmanAgency.com; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, available for appointments outside of normal business hours.

Town/neighborhood: Sun City West.

Personal background highlights: I grew up in Colorado. My biggest accomplishment are my two children. I’m so incredibly proud of them. I have a spectacular granddaughter, Charlotte. She owns my heart!

Professional background highlights: I worked in the steel industry for several years. I was in the building industry for several years in a distribution center — customer service and sales, client relations. I started working in insurance six years ago when I realized how many people needed help getting through the insurance maze. It can be confusing.

What I do: I’m your personal insurance shopper — Medicare, health insurance, life insurance. I’m a broker, I look at several companies to find a policy that best suits your needs. Insurance is not one size fits all. When I become your agent, I am there for you for life. I do not write a policy and you never hear from me again.

What I like most about doing business here: People are very nice. I get to work with people from all over the United States. There isn’t snow or below zero temperatures in the Phoenix area!

Changes I’d like to see in this area: Insurance education. People need to be informed on what type of insurance they are getting and how it works. Medicare plans and health insurance differ from one company to the other. It’s important to know how they work and make sure the client understands also.

What am I promoting: Medicare for those 65 and older and those on disability. Health insurance for individuals and families. Life insurance, the love letter for your family.

What I’m excited about and why: Arizona! I have only been here for a year, I have so much to see and learn. I get to meet new people every day. I’m really looking forward to building my business here and helping those with insurance needs. I get to call Arizona home!

When and why I started my business/employment here: I left the corporate world and became an entrepreneur seven years ago. I saw a need for people to understand insurance after helping my parents start their Medicare journey. I love what I do — helping people. Medicare is confusing, needs to be reviewed every year. Health insurance is hard to understand. Life Insurance is for everyone.

My interests and hobbies: Exploring new places and meeting new people! I sew, ride my bike and walk Spencer and Harlie! I’m looking forward to picking up some new hobbies with all the clubs I can join!

People who inspire me (and how): My mom inspired me most. She said working hard never hurt anybody. Always respect other people. Most importantly, enjoy life and laugh a lot!

My guiding philosophy: Listen — people want to be heard and understood.

My advice to today’s youth: Be kind. Stay open minded to the views and opinions of others. Don’t fear failure, believe it or not it makes you stronger. Always remember your just as important as the next guy.
