Engaging, enriching virtual programs offered for older adults

Posted

The Center for Senior Enrichment (CSE), under the auspices of Jewish Family & Children’s Service, provides daily ZOOM programming for older adults throughout the Valley, exploring music, movement, history, art and more during the month of January.

Kick off the New Year with a smile and join for a special January event as CSE partners with Silver Screen Studios to present Dispatches from Quarantine (DFQ) featuring Carl Reiner 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11.

Carl Reiner, who passed away this summer at 98, left a legacy of laughter and a message for these trying times through Dispatches from Quarantine in what is the last interview with the legendary comedian, actor and TV writer behind the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Mr. Reiner’s final interview was released June 22 as part of Tiffany Woolf’s Dispatches from Quarantine, offering wit, wisdom, and candor to help us all navigate life under lockdown.

Plus, Tiffany Woolf, creator of Silver Screen Studios, joins CSE for this special afternoon screening, followed by a Q&A.

Also new in January is Happy Healthy Hour 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, which concentrates on mindful self-compassion, with tips and tricks to turn one’s inner critic into a best friend. Another new offering in January is a presentation from the Musical Instrument Museum 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, exploring Ethnomusicology with a focus on sounds from Africa.

Vocalist Nicole Pesce returns with another edition of the Great American Songbook 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7. Also on Jan. 7, at 1:30 p.m., is a virtual tour of The Highlights of Paris, with Karen Rudel of Sight Seekers Delight. The Phoenix Art Museum will also feature a new presentation on the Grand Canyon and Mary Colter 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

Chair yoga continues 11 a.m. every Wednesday and starting in January, the Ballet Theatre of Phoenix will present chair ballet classes noon on Fridays.

“Our move to a virtual platform has been successful beyond our expectations,” states Jennifer Brauner, CSE director. “It is particularly gratifying to be able to reach out throughout the Valley at this time to provide meaningful, engaging programs to older adults in the comfort and safety of their own homes.”

Classes and programs are offered Monday through Friday, generally at 11 a.m. and 1 or 2 p.m., and are open to all older adults in the greater Phoenix area. New offerings are added each month. Most are free and all are available on Zoom.

For additional information or to register, contact Jennifer Brauner at seniorcenter@jfcsaz.org or 602-343-0192.

The JFCS Center for Senior Enrichment is partially funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, the Area Agency on Aging and individual donors. Jewish Family & Children’s Service strengthens the community by providing quality behavioral health, health care and social services to all ages, faiths and backgrounds.
