Dr. James Allen Coil, Jr.


Jim Coil died peacefully after a long illness on June 9, 2022 at the age of 85. Born in Colorado Springs, CO on October 28, 1936, Jim graduated with honors from Colorado College in 1958 and from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1962. Jim enlisted in the Army as an officer in the Medical Corps in 1968 and served at the Army’s 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany treating soldiers, many of whom were badly injured in Vietnam.

In 1972, Jim joined the Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Colonel before retiring from the Army in 1990. He chose to work at university affiliated hospitals where he could teach and mentor young surgeons, establishing surgical residency programs and trauma centers in West Virginia, Iowa and Pennsylvania. He retired as the Head of Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, NY.

Jim passed on his love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He was a constant presence in their lives, joining them on Boy Scout camping trips, attending school plays and learning how to eat sushi. He was lifelong student of history and other and cultures. Jim never lost his sense of wonder.

Jim is survived by his son William Coil (Robert Green) of Burlington, VT; daughter Nina Coil (Roy Weinberg) of Appleton, MA; daughter Terra De Almeida (Alberto De Almeida) of Oakland, CA; and daughter Summer White of Yoe, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jennifer Green (Peter Mulvey); Claire and Julia Weinberg; Jeb Purtell, Joseph, Caitlin, Jameson and Joao De Almeida; and Aidan and Berkley White. He is also survived by a great grandson Anir Mulvey.

He was preceded in death by his parents James Coil, Sr. (1909-1970) and Margaret Weinberger (1907-1938); his step-mother Pauline Ohlwein Coil (1912-2002); and his beloved wife Sharon Ryan Coil (1949-2007).

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes, 2808 Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland, CA on Thursday, June 30th at 11:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jim’s memory be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
