Dorothy Qurratu’l-‘Ayn McDaniel

Posted

Dott McDaniel, age 78, passed quietly February 26, 2022 into her next adventure. She was born in Riverdale, Maryland, spending her childhood in several southeastern states, but lived most of her adult years in the Phoenix area.
She is survived by her partner, Nancy Tsuchiya, her three children, Wendy Mathis-Burns of Colorado Springs CO, John Davey of Jakarta, Indonesia and Jeff Davey of Mesa, AZ, as well as Nancy’s daughter, Amelia Tsuchiya of Peoria, AZ. Amelia refers to Dott as her “bonus mom”. Dott has 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Her memorial Service will be held in Sun City on Saturday, April 9th at 11 o’clock at the Church of the Palms, 14808 N Boswell Blvd, Sun City, AZ.
Dott was raised with the concept of being a world-citizen. So, as she honored and respected individuals from other backgrounds, she also worked tirelessly to bring light to the subjects of prejudice in its many forms. She embraced her friends and family as loving individuals and helped them to see their inner beauty.
Dott always threw her brilliant mind and spot-on vocabulary, as well as her generous, warm, heart into whatever she did. As a result, she is known and loved by pockets of people all over the valley.
She worked at the Family Support Center on Luke Air Force Base from its’ inception, retiring after 22 years of service. Dott earned the distinction “Employee of the Year” for many of those years.
She, and her friend Linda Hoffman, started the first chapter of Co-Dependents Anonymous in the Phoenix area.
Dott was on the Board of Directors of the Mesa Encore Theater where her son, Jeff, performed in many productions, and her (now deceased) daughter-in-law, Debra Jo Davey, was music director.
Her favorite hobby in retirement was ceramics. She served on the Board of Fairway Ceramics Club where she created, and passed on to her friends and family, a bounty of wonderful ceramic pieces. Dott also taught classes at the club… her most famous class being on eyes--people, dogs, cats, frogs, turtles, horses, etc.
Dott worked as a volunteer for Phoenix Pride for many years. Even participating in the parade in later years.
In lieu of flowers/plants, we ask that donations be made in her name to the LGBT+ youth organization “One N Ten”. On their website, use homepage button “GIVE”: https://onenten.org
Under the amount section, is a small box for “donate in memory”.
She will be missed….
