Arnopolin, Williams: Flag stolen from SCW yard

Posted

We can’t believe you stole our rainbow flag!

Sometime last weekend (June 20-21), someone came onto our property near 140th Avenue and Cavalcade Drive and removed our lovely rainbow flag. This flag is a symbol that represents the LGBTQ community. We have flown this flag for several years, and numerous people ( straight, LGBTQ and allies) have stopped and thanked us for having the courage to fly it, and told us they were reassured that Sun City West is a safe and tolerant community for everyone.

We are saddened to think that one of our fellow Sun City West residents felt emboldened enough to trespass, and then steal a flag that wasn’t bothering anyone, but flapping its colorful rainbow stripes. June happens to be LGBTQ pride month. It’s unthinkable that someone who may disagree with our values felt they could just steal the flag to make values of love and acceptance disappear. That flag stands for Love, pure and simple. Love thy neighbor, love the stranger. And what happened to thou shall not steal? Isn’t that how we are all supposed to live our lives?

We humbly ask that it be returned, no questions asked. Perhaps it was a fearful momentary lapse of judgment, or perhaps that person just needed a bit more love in their day. We will happily buy you your own flag, but please return ours.
