Barry Cline was born in Orange, California, where he and his family lived until he was 12 years old. After sixth grade, his family moved to Indiana where he graduated from high school. He then went on to study at Texas Lutheran College and Santa Ana Community College.

Following his college education, Cline was accepted into the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters of Santa Ana, CA, thus joining his father and brother in the trade. In 1985 while working in the trade, Cline met and married his wife Jody and had five children. After teaching apprentice school for 12 years and working in the trade for 40 years, Cline retired and moved his family from California to Oregon where they spent many years and gained six grandchildren.

Cline’s love of photography began in earnest after he and Jody started scuba diving in 2007. The desire to share and replicate the beautiful life under water was the start of his quest, and underwater photography became his tool to do this. After shooting in ambient light (natural light) for the first nine years he finally switched to adding strobes to provide the correct light for color. During one of the many underwater photography workshops he and Jody attended it was mentioned that the best way to master a camera was to use it above water. This inspired Cline to begin shooting more subjects. He discovered landscape photography, wildlife photography and night sky photography were as interesting and enjoyable as the underwater photography he had been doing. His quest lead to traveling and he and Jody have discovered the beauty of many national parks and recently visited the “Mighty Five” in southern Utah.

In 2021, Barry and Jody relocated from Eugene, Oregon, to Sun City, and they have begun to discover and photograph the beauty of the desert. One reason to move to Sun City was to be able to participate in the Camera Guild with its state of the art facility and the diversity of photographers to share ideas and photos with. Learning to use the various equipment available to members of the club and sharing presentations at club meetings have all been beneficial in Cline’s quest to bring what he sees to others.
