Valley Barro’s locations raising money for St. Mary’s Food Bank today

All proceeds go to feed hungry families in Arizona through holidays

On Tues., Dec. 7, Barro’s Pizza will host the tenth annual Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight benefiting St. Mary’s Food Bank. From open to close at all 46 locations across the Valley, the Barro family will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from all sales to help those in Arizona facing hard times during the holidays.

“So many in our community are struggling,” said Ken Barro co-owner of Barro’s Pizza. “This annual event means so much to our family. It’s a time that we dedicate to encouraging our whole community to give back and help those in need. We do this event each year in honor of our mother, Doran Barro. This mission was very near and dear to her heart, so it’s just one more reason that we go all in every year.”

Last year, Barro’s Pizza set a record raising more than $335,000 for St. Mary’s Food Bank and Barro’s is hoping to set a new record, this year. Every dollar donated equates to seven meals, so last year’s donation provided 2,345,000 meals to Arizona’s hungry during the holiday season.

Over the last nine years, Barro’s has raised over $1.8 million which equals more than 12.6 million meals. The Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight has become St. Mary’s largest cause-marketing effort of the year.

“We encourage everyone to support the annual Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight by visiting their neighborhood Barro’s restaurant on Tuesday, Dec. 7,” St. Mary’s President and CEO Tom Kertis said. “The Barro family and their incredible customers have raised funds to provide more than 12 million meals for Arizona’s hungry during the holidays, and we thank them for their commitment to those in need.”

The Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight is named after the matriarch of the Barro family, Doran Barro, who the family lost in 2016.

The issue of hunger in Arizona and around the world was very important to Doran so she took on this effort with the support of her family and friends and most importantly, with the support of Barro’s loyal customers who participate each year.

The Barro family chose to continue this fundraiser in her honor.

  • One large pizza = 70 meals
  • One order of wings = 42 meals
  • One side salad = 25 meals
  • One fountain drink = 13 meals

“In the first nine years of the Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight, the Barro Family has raised nearly $2 million for St. Mary’s Food Bank to support the hungry of Arizona,” St. Mary’s President and CEO Tom Kertis said. “We encourage everyone to support this incredible day of giving on Tuesday, Dec. 7 and visit your neighborhood Barro’s location.

“It is a truly rare event to see 100 percent of everything sold in a day donated to charity, but the Barros are a truly rare family, committed to helping Arizona families in need,” he added.
