Trice: Strive to make things better for all in Sun City

Posted

The familiar joke, “Why did the chicken cross the road?,” has been around for many years. It really wasn’t meant to be funny, but it did provide the answer, “To get to the other side.”

Many animals try to cross the road unaware of the dangers, like automobile traffic. Deer, raccoons, squirrels, wild turkeys, opossums and chipmunks have all been highway casualties because they wanted to cross the road, perhaps to graze in a greener pasture or to flee man or natural predators.

Similar to the desire of animals, we may also want to cross roads for better opportunities. The Israelites fled Egypt and crossed the Red Sea in order to be free. Black slaves fled plantations to freedom in northern cities and Canada through the underground railroad. Others crossed oceans to American shores in order to flee political oppression, poverty or religious persecution.

America has been an icon of personal, civil and economic freedom for hundreds of years and still attracts people from all over the world. It is comprised of many multi-racial groups (white, black, Asian, Native-Americans, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino) and religious groups (Protestantism, Catholicism, other Christian groups, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and non-religion) who strive to be at peace with one another.

It is up to all of us to continue to make America the great nation it is despite our differences.
