Tax program needs Sun City volunteers for season

Training available for all positions

One of the busiest programs in Sun City is looking for volunteers.

The AARP Tax-Aide program provided free income tax assistance to more than 2,200 taxpayers last year, and more are expected when the new tax season begins in February. Each year the program relies on volunteers to meet the needs of the residents who flock to the Sun City Community Assistance Network office, 10195 W. Coggins Drive, to have their income tax returns filled out and filed, and take care of other tax needs.

“In order to keep our operation running, we need volunteers,” said Jim Graff, Sun City AARP Tax-Aide program coordinator.

There are three positions available for volunteers — greeters, who initially meets with the taxpayer, answers basic questions and provides paperwork needed; pre-counselors, who reviews the documentation brought in by the taxpayer to make certain that they brought everything needed; and counselors, the volunteers that actually prepare the tax return.

Mr. Graff said multiple volunteers are needed to fill these positions. The Sun City CAN office is packed with taxpayers daily waiting to have their returns completed.

AARP Tax-Aide personnel will provide training for volunteers, according to Mr. Graff. An Orientation session is scheduled 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Sun City CAN office. Additional training will follow.

The tax filing season begins Feb. 1 and runs through April 15. In addition, volunteers are available after April 15 for late filers and other tax issues.
