Sun City West organization gets top award

Knights of Columbus Our Lady of Lourdes Council 11809 wins Star Council Award

Knights of Columbus Our Lady of Lourdes Council 11809 in Sun City West was awarded the distinction of Star Council, the international organization’s top honor for local councils. The Star Council Award recognizes overall excellence in growing membership, promoting Knights of Columbus insurance benefits, sponsoring Catholic faith formation programs, and volunteering time through service-oriented activities.

2021-2022 Council Activities

The Star Council Award recognizes outstanding achievements in membership, insurance and programming. To achieve the Star Council Award, a council must earn Father McGivney, Founder’s, and Columbian Awards. This was the second year earning the STAR council award.

Intellectual Disabilities (Tootsie Roll) Drive – The council collected $3,007 in donations while giving away Tootsie Rolls and good wishes.

Raffle Ticket Sales – Our Lady of Lourdes council sold over $14,500 of state raffle tickets. There was $2,430 donated to each of the following organizations:

  • Our Lady of Lourdes Parish
  • First Way Pregnancy Center
  • Valley View Community Food Bank

Fish FRYdays – The Council & Ladies Auxiliary served over 1,500 meals and over $14,500 in sales. Profits supported Vivit Christus and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

Food/Water Drives – Brother Joe Kowalkowski, who looks good in a turkey outfit, coordinated a Turkey Drive, Food Drives and Water Drives.

Coats for Kids – The council distributed 72 coats to St. Michael parish in Gila Bend and 36 coats to Nadaburg and Desert Oasis schools.

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See.
