The Sun City Rockhound Club embarked on a fossil and rock collecting field trip to the Payson area. The collection site was 20 miles north of Payson in a picturesque mountain area near Whispering Pines. The club members were in search of geodes commonly called thundereggs, crinoid fossils and brachiopod fossils.
Thundereggs are filled with minerals that look like crystals and Crinoid fossils were first formed 300 million years before dinosaurs.
See displays of these minerals at The Sun City Mineral Museum, in the Sundial Recreation Center, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.
This field trip marked the last of the 2021-22 season. Field trips will start up again in October.
