President Franklin Roosevelt in 1942 signed the “United States Flag Code” that established rules for the display and care of the American flag.
The code specifies that “When a flag is so tattered that it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be replaced in a dignified manner.” Low-income Sun City residents who have tattered flags but cannot replace them can do so through a limited number that were donated to Sun City CAN by an anonymous donor.
The agency received 25 three-foot by five-foot American flags to be distributed to low-income residents whose American flags have become torn, tattered or weatherbeaten.
Call the CAN office at 623-933-7530 to reserve one of the flags either for yourself or for a neighbor whose flag needs to be replaced. Residents who get a flag for someone could leave the new flag on their neighbor’s porch with a note stating, “I hope you enjoy this new flag.”
There is no criteria for who is “low-income,” but Sun City CAN officials urge residents to not take a flag if they can easily afford to buy a new one. Officials hope the free flags will be given to those who cannot easily afford to replace their own flag.
The Sun City CAN office is located at 10195 W. Coggins Drive.
