Prescott choir, orchestra plays in Surprise

Prescott’s regional professional orchestra, Arizona Philharmonic, presents Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutches Requiem (Brahms Requiem), the composer’s longest and most complex work, in a new chamber orchestration by Joachim Linckelmann.
“Linckelmann’s recent arrangement is a fresh, new interpretation of this masterwork, featuring the clarity of Dr. Joshua Harper’s Quartz Ensemble’s 12 voices, balances with AZ Phil’s double quintet plus timpani chamber orchestra,” stated Henry Flurry, Arizona Philharmonic Executive Director. A local performance of Brahms Requiem is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Vista Center for the Arts.
“Brahms Requiem is one of the most beloved and popular choral orchestral works, but it is not commonly done in this area due to the demands on both orchestra and choir. This new arrangement provides a unique opportunity to hear an intimate setting of one of music history’s most important composer’s most important work,” said Dr. Joshua Harper, Quartz Ensembles Artistic Director. “While most requiems focus on the dead, this requiem focuses on the living: the assurance of a state of blessedness. This is the first performance of this chamber orchestration in Arizona, and features soprano soloist Sarah Smith, and baritone Cailin Marcel Manson,” Harper added.
Also on the program, AZ Phil presents Ligeti’s Old Hungarian Ballroom Dances. Composed while under Stalin’s anti-modernism mandates, Ligeti offers a playful and slightly defiant side in this charming work.
The Quartz Ensemble is Northern Arizona’s newest professional choir, bringing together singers from across Arizona and the West Coast. Quartz was founded in 2021 and premiered in May 2021 with Arizona Philharmonic in Yavapai College Performing Arts Center’s only public concert during the pandemic.
Arizona Philharmonic is celebrating its fourth season in Prescott in 2021-22 as Prescott’s regional professional orchestra, presenting large and small concerts that engage and inspire listeners. Based in Prescott and performing also in Surprise, AZ Phil draws musicians from across Arizona and is committed to offering transformative music, while nurturing community participation and supporting the needs and growth of the Prescott-area performing arts scene.
