Matthies: New Year’s Day hole in one in Sun City

Posted

My wife and I live on the Palmbrook Country Club golf course and are accustomed to holiday duffers misdirecting their shots.

We have many pock marks in the stucco north wall of our house to prove it. But not all of the misguided balls damage the wall, some land on our flat roof waiting for me to climb up there and pitch them back on the green.

On New Year’s Day, one of those errant balls did a single roof bounce, rolled a bit and then managed to sink itself into the rooftop opening for the kitchen stove exhaust fan! Ting, bing, bang, down the hole it fell.

Fortunately, we were in the kitchen at the time. Jim, our handyman, has been called to retrieve the prize ball. Unfortunately we did not get the name of the golfer when he drove his cart up to our backyard searching for his lucky ball.

Taking the good and the bad aspects of having a beautiful, green back yard that I do not have to maintain.
