Hayes: Treatment center not compatible for Sun City

Posted

I have been aware of a facility in Sun City. It is emerald Isle. It is located on the northwest corner of Peoria and 107th avenues (“Treatment center draws ire,” Sun City Independent, Sept. 23, 2020).

I see a lot of young people around this facility and wondered about it. There is also a vehicle parked in the lot that looks disabled with flat tires, which has not been moved for more than a month.

I looked it up and I see that this is a residential treatment center for drug addicts and alcoholics, as well as all other types of addiction, including various types of mental illness. The in-house inpatient treatment is for 30 days. This building was a funeral home prior to this.

Is Sun City the right area for this type of business with age restrictive living? We are a 55 and older community. I do not understand how this facility was given the right to have a residential treatment center housing people who should not be living in Sun City.

I have talked to neighbors who do believe this may lead to unsafe problems. We have had other issues on that corner that took a long time to solve.

I do understand that people with addiction need to be treated so they can function with normal living. But I do not believe this is the area for that. I would love to know if anyone else living here believes that also.
