Harmer: Reader wants people to take responsibility in Sun City

Posted

Again I feel compelled to chime in on another of your articles. This one, to me, is really about what’s right and common sense.

I’m a baby boomer and own a home in Sun City, so of course I have a vested interest in these ongoing issues. You’ve asked our opinions and we respond in kind.

As many of us that live or own here are on fixed incomes these issues are not offset by working a couple hours of overtime, nor should they be. Most sound and fair people, in my opinion, see many issues as “clean up your own mess,” we were raised that way and live that way.

When you start to ask people to clean up after others, in this case we are talking wastewater and water issues, there is bound to be push back, of course. Seems like a normal, natural knee jerk reaction to something that just doesn’t pass the smell test.

It’s actually inconceivable in the first place that it’s an issue. How on God’s green earth would cause people that built, maintain and paid for the initial systems ever think they would come out on the short end of the stick?

But here we are in that exact place that is inconceivable to be in. Boy, have things changed in this country. Shame on many, especially the greedy.

Our water system has always been lopsided in the first place. Wastewater cost is basically calculated on a gallon in is a gallon out; that’s a joke, too. Not only are we being asked to to subsidize someone else’s waste treatment and potable water, we are already paying to treat wastewater that does not ever make it back into the system.

I’m not aware of one person in our neighborhood that doesn’t water their trees or wash an occasional vehicle. That water does go through our meter and is easy enough to keep track of. To charge 100% of incoming as outgoing is and has been the scam of the century in the first place.

Anyway, I’m hoping that others are aware of this. If you’re boiling now, no pun intended. I’m guessing you’re probably already paying wastewater fees 30% to 40% higher then what you’d ever think your cooking, shower and toilet could consume.

Alright, bad enough? Nope, it’s not! Now we are being lumped in with other communities of better financial means and asked to pick up even more slack. That’s just plain flawed thinking.

God bless America.
