Covelli: Hard to accept realities of nature in Sun City

Posted

Barbara Thornley (“Coyotes in Sun City get brazen,” Sun City Independent, July 14, 2021) please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the sudden loss of your cat.

Having lost my beloved Catpuccino to coyotes two years ago, I can imagine the range of feelings you are experiencing. My hope is that comfort will come soon to you.

It’s always been difficult for me to accept the harsher realities of nature. Living here has shown me that “it is what it is.” I hold no hard feelings toward the hungry coyote who mistook my beloved for food. Some coyotes indeed are desperate. Others seem almost tame, walking casually along the sidewalk and stopping to rest and lick their paws dog-like.

Three healthy young ones were playing together on a golf course. One came sniffing around some bushes where bunnies were in hiding and flushed one out. The coyote held me in awe as it leapt through the bushes like a gazelle or puppy would. This slowed its pace enough for the bunny to escape.

Peaceful coexistence in what is now a shared habitat does require added caution. I’m sorry we found that out the hard way.
