Briarwood in Sun City West golfers gather luggage for children

Charity event helps those in foster care

Posted

The 9-Hole Ladies Golf Association at Briarwood Country Club, 20800 N. 135th Ave., Sun City West, collected more than 30 suitcases for the Arizona Department of Child Safety during a charity event led by Judy Johnson.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety is charged with child protection, but also serves as a visionary leader in primary prevention, partnering with other family-serving agencies and community organizations to improve community health and strengthen families. One of the ways department officials can assist children coming into care is by providing them with suitcases to keep their personal items secure.

When children are removed, due to abuse or neglect, they often do not have a suitcase to place their personal belongings in and a trash bag is often used. Department officials want to be able to supply children with suitcases to show them that they are valuable and their personal belongings are valuable as well.

Pam Harris, Maricopa East Community coordinator, was thankful for the 9-Hole Ladies Golf Association at Briarwood Country Club for collecting these suitcases to provide to foster children across Maricopa County.

Briarwood officials plan to conduct another luggage collection again in the fall.
