Bennett: Some Sun City residents can’t afford rec fees now

Posted

There has been much written about residents’ concerns regarding crime in the area.

Some residents have suggested hiring a security force, which, of course, would have to be paid for.

In a recent submission (“RCSC should provide for residents,” Sun City Independent, July 13, 2022) Robert Wheat questioned why the money we pay to the recreation centers is being used to hire security for the recreation centers and is not being used to protect residents.

Good question. He goes on to say, however, “If all else fails, they can raise the rec fees...” Now hold it right there, Mr. Wheat. You may be financially flushed enough to peel off $496 without blinking an eye, but not all of us are so lucky.

Some of us have planned months in advance to pay the assessment. We have to think about cutting back on certain things in order to save up the $496. We have to buy less at the grocery store to save a few dollars. We may have to skip meals to make that food stretch to save a few dollars. We may have to turn our thermostat down in the winter and turn it up in the summer to save a few dollars. We may have to take medication every other day instead of every day to save a few dollars.

I’m sure there are many examples of how some of us scrimp and save to pay that assessment. Don’t be so caviler about suggesting that recreation center fees be increased. Some of us cannot afford and increase in the assessment and cannot afford to move elsewhere.
