A hero in the form of a Chevrolet Cruz may have saved the lives of a couple pushing a stroller through a Phoenix crosswalk, police said.
Phoenix police on Wednesday released video of the incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. Oct. 14. The video shows a couple pushing a stroller while crossing Indian School Road at 53rd Avenue.
Moments after they enter the crosswalk, a Jeep enters the intersection on a red light. However, a Chevrolet Cruz on 53rd Avenue entered the intersection on a green light, colliding with the Jeep, just a few feet away from the pedestrians.
The Phoenix Police Department released video of a near pedestrian collision involving a red-light driver on Oct. 14, 2019 near Indian School Road and 53rd Avenue.
Police said the driver of the Jeep, Ernesto Otanez Oveso, and a female passenger took off running after the collision. Police said Mr. Oveso noticed a witness was following him and told that man to stop, even stabbing one of the doors on his car.
The 28-year-old was arrested on DUI and aggravated assault charges. Police said they found a gun in the Jeep and added a prohibited possession charge.
The woman with Mr. Oveso at the time of the crash was not located.
The driver of the Chevrolet Cruz was a 27-year-old woman. While she sustained injuries, police said they were not life-threatening.
The Daily Independent on Oct. 15 had requested Form IV documents for Mr. Oveso’s arrest, but the Maricopa County Superior Court did not have records of the arrest in their system.
