Pingerelli: Unwavering commitment to my constituents

Posted

This election is consequential and requires a thoughtful analysis of candidates before we cast our ballots. As such, I would like to provide you with a summary of my campaign: If elected, I’ll focus on post-pandemic economic recovery, reforms to Arizona K-12 education, enhancing public safety, and the health and well-being of our citizens.

The pandemic has shuttered businesses resulting in permanent job loss for many Arizonans while government overreach has, in some cases, exacerbated this situation. In order for us to successfully recover, we must reinvigorate our economy by supporting small business owners, reducing the overall state tax burden, attracting new industries, and providing career technical and vocational training to displaced workers. Because this crisis is likely to have serious effects on the state budget, strong and unwavering leadership by our legislature is necessary to maximize state resources as we face increasing public service demands.

For example, Arizona Medicaid enrollment has now reached 2 million, or 27% of Arizona residents. To effectively manage increasing enrollments, it’s critical we take measures to reduce operating costs and manage capacity.

No less important to a robust economy is education. Our K-12 Arizona education should prepare Arizona’s children for success in life. Instead, we see declining student assessment scores and pandemic related interruptions to instruction resulting in widening student achievement gaps — particularly for families facing economic challenges. Currently, 43% of the state budget is spent on education while Arizona Title 15 education regulations exceed 30,000 pages. Regulation reform can create a reasonable compliance environment and allow us to redirect the cost savings to our classrooms.

By emphasizing teaching excellence instead of compliance, we can incentivize exceptional teachers with pay increases, improve the quality of education in our district schools, and offer our parents and children excellent school choice alternatives to best meet their needs.

Individual well-being, educational opportunity, and economic prosperity rely on public safety, yet nationally, 86% of law enforcement agencies have long-term staffing shortages. Unfilled vacancies are also prevalent in Arizona, so we must provide law enforcement with the training, resources and funding needed to fill these positions, reform policies where needed, build community trust, and continue to keep our communities safe.

I share many of your concerns, and as a clean election candidate, my campaign was funded by reaching out to donors living in our legislative district. I haven’t accepted donations from political action committees or out-of-state donors wanting to influence the legislation affecting our district and state. Like past elections, a lot of money will be spent and much of it will misinform you and ensure we remain a divided community. In contrast, I’m campaigning on the results I want to accomplish on your behalf and the policies that will bring greater prosperity to our state.
