‘The Sound of Music’ continues Friday-Saturday at Zao Theatre

Posted

"The Sound of Music," the world’s most beloved musical, graces the Zao Theatre stage through April 17, featuring the music of Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, as suggested by the memoirs of Maria Augusta von Trapp.

Zao Theatre is at 550 S. Ironwood Drive in Apache Junction. For show-time information and tickets, visit our website at zaotheatre.com.

The original Broadway production, an inspirational story, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Capt. von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. That original production starred Mary Martin as Maria and won five Tony Awards in 1959 including Best Musical. The show was adapted to film and went on to take its place in the 1966 cinematic history books with Julie Andrews in the starring role. All in all, The Sound of Music garnered Tony and Grammy Awards, an Oscar for Best Score and far too many additional awards to mention here.

By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time surpassing Gone With The Wind. It held that distinction for five years. The film proved just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in 29 countries. In 1998, the American Film Institute listed The Sound of Music as the fourth greatest movie musical in the history of film musicals. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

The show features some of the most delightful, if not infectious, songs of all time. It is an endearing love story set in Austria at the dawn of World War II with one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family is here at Zao Theatre to once again thrill its audiences. Come hear your favorites songs, “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and of course, the title song — “The Sound of Music.”
